To win at poker, one has to be analytical and make sound decisions based on what information is available and what is likely to happen. Basically, you should try to think ahead when you are in a hand to recognize what options are going to be open to you when the next card comes.
Thinking ahead means you must first assess the other players and get some idea on how they play. Who is tight, who is loose, who is unpredictable? By looking for and recognizing certain characteristics and tells, you will sometimes be able to take a good guess on how an online poker opponent will react to your strategies.
Next, look at the board and assess its texture. Focus on which cards in the deck can change or complete the board texture. For instance, if there are two to a suit, or two connected cards, think about how another suited or connected card affects your hand and possibly your opponent’s. What if the cards to come completely miss you hand? If any of these scenarios unfold, what is the best move you can make based on your position and your opponent’s tendencies?
By thinking ahead, you will be better prepared for the best and worst case scenarios. Getting caught by surprise and having to make a decision on the spot can lead to mistakes when you play poker online.
