When it comes to invasive procedures such as plastic surgery, there is also some slight risk of infection or other complications. Labioplasty is among the safest of all cosmetic procedures, however; in addition, over 95% of all women who have had a labioplasty procedure report great satisfaction with the results even four years afterwards.
Female genital surgery compares quite favorably with other reconstructive and cosmetic procedures in this regard. Dr. Jeff Rawnsley, who heads up the Facial Asthetic Center at USCA, has noted that the initial success rate for labioplasty exceeds that of other procedures such as breast augmentation (having a satisfaction rate of 90%) and rhinoplasty or nose surgery (only about 85% of such patients express long-term satisfaction with their results). Furthermore, a fair number of these patients eventually have additional surgery performed in order to deal with complications or other problems that arose from the initial surgery. This incidentally is why it is important to make sure that your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, as these doctors have received the proper training in the latest techniques and have the skills to help you in achieving the most satisfactory long-term results.
No more than 7% of the patients who undergo labioplasty ever require follow-up or revision surgery. This is due in large part to the greatly improved techniques used today as well as the more readily available laser surgical tools being used that cut down on pain and discomfort while greatly reducing the amount of time needed for recovery. While there are complications on rare occasions, these are usually very minor and can be treated at the time of the initial surgery.
This is not to say that there won’t be some amount of pain, discomfort and inconvenience. While most patients can return to normal activities at the end of two weeks, there are some activities particularly those such as bicycling and horseback riding that should be avoided for at least six weeks following genital surgery. (This also includes sexual intercourse, which can put strain on the stitch lines.)
These things being understood, if you are in good physical health overall and have a health psychological outlook as well as a good understanding of the purpose of labioplasty, such an operation is the best solution to the problems associated with an extended labia.
