Deep-sea fishing enthusiasts who visit the Bahamas hold a special place in their hearts for Bimini. Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea clearly points out to this and anyone who is an angler and has read the book will agree. Bimini is about 50 miles away from the coast of Miami, and is a preferred destination for those looking out for a tranquil weekend with friends and family. Anglers just die for an opportunity to catch fish such as a giant blue marlin or a swordfish.
What drew Hemingway to Bimini were stories about people who had caught some great fish. He holds the world record for a couple of great catches he hauled from the waters out here. He wrote about Bimini in his novels, and ‘Islands in the Stream’ in particular is responsible for drawing the world’s attention to Bimini. In fact, it’s after this novel that Bimini’s reputation as the fishing capital of the world was eatablished. When he was in Bimini, Hemingway stayed at the hotel “Compleat Angler” and wrote several articles during his stay there. Unfortunately, the hotel burnt down in a fire in 2006 and very few bits of the Hemingway memorabilia was left.
Bimini is a great place for those looking to enjoy water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling. Excellent food is found in the restaurants in Bimini, and one can enjoy seafood cooked from the freshest catch of the day. See, one doesn’t have to be a Ponce de Leon looking for the fountain of youth, or a true believer looking for the lost city of Atlantis, to visit Bimini. All it takes is to be a lover of the good things in life, such as great food and a fun-filled vacation. There are a number of ship wrecks in the area which one can explore where colorful fish have made their homes. One could either visit the tiny islands of North or South Bimini if looking for an ideal vacation spot.
