Every leader, supervisor, coach, team member and parent has been told of the value of giving positive feedback. We’ve heard reasons why. We’ve heard we don’t do it enough. We’ve learned all of the basics about giving positive feedback successfully: make it timely, make it specific, and when giving positive feedback consider sharing it publicly.

All of this is good advice, but it falls short of the mark if we want to make a long term lasting difference in the self-image, confidence, and performance of others. In short, if you want to give positive feedback, consider doing more than telling people how you feel, consider writing it down.

Why Write it Down

Here are three reasons why written feedback is so valuable.

1. It is unusual. While most of us give (and receive) far too little positive feedback to start with, receiving it in writing is even more rare. The time taken to form our thoughts and write them down demonstrates to the receiver how valuable and important the feedback is.

2. It can be preserved. Verbal feedback can be preserved, but only in the mind of the receiver. I know that I have had people tell me very nice things that I remember, and in some cases I can even take you to the exact location that they told me. But our memories can fail, and those events can just be lost among the millions of moments in our lives. Not so with something in writing. Not only can the thoughts and comments be preserved, but you can bet that in many cases they will be saved… for a very long time.

3. It will be re-read and therefore reinforced. Verbal praise is shared and can be savored by the receiver, but I don’t think many people will stop the person giving the feedback and say, “Will you tell me that again please?” Quite the opposite for the hand written note. It will be read at least twice initially, and if the feedback is especially meaningful, perhaps several more times in the coming days – and often far beyond.

Some Ways to Do It

It really is as simple as picking up your pen and writing heartfelt, genuine comments to another human being. Here are some ways to help you get in the habit of giving people positive feedback in writing.

1. Send a letter. Writing someone a quick letter doesn’t take very long. It doesn’t need to be formal, it just needs to genuinely tell the other person how you feel. Don’t put it off, just write it.

2. I like you because. I learned this from Zig Ziglar. He used to (and perhaps still does) produce small pads that used this sentence stem to make it easier to give someone positive feedback. The was printed with “I Like You Because” then it had several lines for you to fill in your note. I have used this idea for many years in a variety of settings with great success. Create your own pad like this on your computer, or start with a blank piece of paper or index card. Using this sentence starter may help you get started (and help you look for and find) the behaviors you want to praise.

3. Thank you notes. An extension of written feedback is the hand written thank you note. Most of us could write more thank you notes than we do, and they serve as an acknowledgement of what someone did for us, but they also serve as positive feedback. Commit to writing more thank you notes, or to adding a bit more feedback to those notes you do write.

4. Send them an email. This can be a letter in email, or a quick reply to a project update, letting someone know you thought their approach was good, or you appreciate how they are handling something. While the handwritten note is hard to beat, emails will be saved and re-read too. Don’t underestimate the value of a quick three or four line email.

I could tell you stories of how meaningful written feedback has been, both to me and those I know. I could tell you stories of notes kept for years and re-read often. I could tell of people who said that some hand written encouragement buoyed their confidence and helped them through tough times and contributed mightily to their success.

You probably know of some of these stories too – which means you know my premise is right – that written praise can be extremely powerful. Since we know that it is valuable, and we know that it will be more than just appreciated, then it is our responsibility as leaders, teachers, parents, and siblings … as people … to give feedback to others in this way.

I’ll bet as you read these words you thought of at least one person you could share positive reinforcement with in writing. Since you know who it is, and what to say, and now you’ve been reminded of the impact that act could have, you have no other choice.

Write that note now.

You’ll be glad you did, and so will the recipient. And who knows, you may change another person’s life forever.

Well the other day our think tank got on a discussion of rowing across the Pacific in a Rowboat. Now before you laugh there is a Frenchman who actually did it. He went across the Atlantic four times. We got to thinking of the logistics needed to beat this record he set of 129 days.

One of our think tank members Swift from Las Vegas thought; “The best position would be in the central part of the boat, while rowing in a forward position; but during rowing races not everyone is in the central part of the boat. What about getting seasick? Medication might be needed, it helps, it doesn’t stop it in everyone because it is appearing to be a genetic issue that’s stronger in some than in others. What about cadence?”

I thought well, that is a very interesting point I thought; Well, it would be fine, like a long distance runners cadence only even slower really. But in running you step every half-second or 3 times per second. Sometimes striding out .75 times or 1 time per second.

Swift began to discuss the similarities of the Tour de France to paddling across the Pacific Ocean and noted that someone like Lance Armstrong only a rowing champion would be the best type of human to try something like this.”

However I thought what if we had a scientifically and perfectly engineered boat with special oars, which allowed it to travel very fast thru the water, even with the waves? Could we take a very dedicated and mentally tough average good athlete and still get it done? If we could, I would or might like to try it.

Swift said well you are crazy enough to try it, I suppose and said; “Lance, I can see you crossing the ocean–it would be fun. With composites, the ship could be designed to be quite aerodynamic to move through the water more efficiently than wood or other materials. Perhaps, there could be something with the design or the weight at the bottom that would discourage the thing from flipping over during storms.”

Indeed, I thought these are excellent points aren’t they? Yes, of course you would have to stay alert and fight it? That would be a challenge. If it got to bad, close her up airtight and wait it out. Conquer your fears. Develop a self-enclosed and encapsulated pod as part of the boat incase of Typhoons or Hurricanes or just really dangerous and rough seas.

Swift said, well we will have to check to see if the French guy had sails, but if they would be made out of this film, there’d be electricity that wouldn’t add a lot to the weight. (New Flexible Solar Panels like on the Aerovironment “Pathfinder”) How peaceful would it be to be moving on a calm sea with the boat lit up so one could determine when the calmness would be over. There would be a lot of clues that a person could figure out in the time it took to cross. I wonder if things are different over the Ring of Fire as far as water currents and movements of storms. It would be great to have a computer, so one could have a program of the maps of the ocean in these areas, so as one rowed, the idea that there was an underground volcano, so fish might be plentiful to catch that day.

Yes indeed I said, some electronics would be needed for navigation. Yes or a satellite radio or something I suppose. You could on a very calm time send emails by a satellite? But short wave might be the best way to do it. Might be cool to have a Satellite Phone too.

Swift indicated that it might also be an important consideration for proper seating. “Something that would be important would be to create an ergonomically correct seat to row on so the back wasn’t stressed unduly. Perhaps, there would be some type of upper body garment that could be worn at first that would encourage the correct posture so there’d be muscle memory for the rest of the journey.”

Good plan I said; “Smart thinking. But do not make it too easy otherwise that would be a real problem for the challenge of it, as it is a test of will, the ultimate survival. You must battle the adversity with will and human intent, you see that is the fun of it?”

Swift said; “I was thinking about this last night and today, and the movement would be a rocking motion in liquid, which would be very womb-like. I wonder if storms would feel more intense when they occurred because of the sensory deprivation and how the womb-like movement might affect the primitive area of the brain.”

Indeed what about vertigo; although it does sound peaceful to me. On a pitch-black night with my new invention for my LED light, to flicker on the waves ahead so you did not get any surprises. The light would run off the waves slapping against the hull and the vibrational energy. Well yes all that would be a consideration, but also I think conquering the fear and risk might be a way to really make the experience a life event worthy of the human endeavor. If we talk all the danger away, it might not seem like such an adventure. You need enough to not necessarily feel 100% safe, but comfortable knowing you were prepared for the ’survival’ aspect of the journey.

Swift said; “It would be important to be able to access NASA’s AIRS system that is integrated with the Global Forecast System. Microwave and infrared imaging would help improve the accuracy of the 4 to 5 day storm forecasts as it could penetrate the cloud layers to show the temperature and water content of major storms. The accuracy is supposed by improve by 20% so one could determine the best times to take a shower–cold as it might be. It’s good to be prepared.”

“I was thinking that the bottom of the ship or boat could also take advantage of the cold of the water and could be a refrigeration unit so that food could be preserved in a safer manner and could be more fresh food than canned foods. The weight of the ship would diminish only slightly with better food and cans that wouldn’t be tossed overboard. Freeze-dried can be so boring. There would be a better nutritional mix, which is important for the success of the journey. If one fished well, the journey could be a great series of gourmet meals! How about a solar oven so one could bake while rowing? “

Indeed Swift is correct this would be a smart plan, but right under me I would want to be able to see the ocean underneath too. I would not be concerned with anything but sustenance. I wouldn’t want to make it too easy, but I could tow a small line and fish is good protein. Solar Oven, yes I have seen those, good idea. And you could make your own water by using a can of seawater and a mirror at an angle off the top condensation would run into the fresh water can. Also they make little RO filtration units, which are solar and then kill bacteria in a solar pack.

Now then Swift gets serious; “Would you choose the Atlantic or the Pacific, Lance?”

I had to stop and think for a second, well probably the pacific, but at certain times of the year you could do an Atlantic voyage? I guess all we need now is a perfect rowboat, some oars, rationing and a Corporate Sponsor? What would you take if you were going to paddle across the ocean? Think on it.

Edwards persuaded counterpart Jake Kolleth at the Stardust — a former Sam’s Town colleague — to post matchups on the 400.

What the heck am I talking about?

Let me tell you that this will be one of my ‘Chilli Pepper’ articles, it’s HOT and very controversial.

If you’ve spent anything more than 5 minutes in the Internet Marketing world, you will most probably come across something called ‘Resale Rights’ / or often called Reprint Rights.

This is where the creator / owner of the product, which could be an ebook, course, script or software, gives you permission to sell the product -and typically to keep all the proceeds – i.e. 100% profit to you.

Sounds good?

Hold on…….. it gets better (or worse depending on your point of view).

Often, if buying Resale Rights, you are granted ‘Master Rights’ – this is the right to pass on the resale rights to other people. You could a step further, and often you can get the right to pass on the Master Rights to others.

This can be a Catch-22 situation. Whilst selling to someone the ‘right’ to sell to others the right to sell a product may sound good, and indeed there are many out there in cyber-land who love to buy resale rights and master rights, it can also cause a few problems.

If YOU are selling master resale rights, which in turn allow others to sell master rights, which then allow their customer to sell rights, and so on…… before long, the market is saturated with your product – and it can no longer be sold.

Here it will end up in the bargain-bin, or piled together with a load of bonuses to sell something else. If your product really is any good, it will soon be devalued, as many people look at bonuses or freebies as worthless. While some try to sell it, others are simply giving it away for free.

Hmmmmm……

That’s how things USED to be.

Resale Rights were often sold by the creator(s) of products, after they had been selling the product for quite some time, made a bucket-load of cash, saw that the sales were dropping off, and have created a new product to replace it.

So, they decided to cash-in one final time on their product, and allow others to sell – for it a license fee. The creator has already moved on from this product – but he/she now makes another little pot of gold by selling X-hundred resale licenses at $xxx each.

The ‘market’ was becoming very wary and wise to this, so now the flavour of the month is to sell ‘White Label’, or ‘Private Label’ or fully rebrandable rights to products.

In theory, this is GREAT! You take a fully (or very nearly) completed product. Finish it off, perhaps add a little here and there, give it a name, create some graphics -and off you go! It’s the guts of a great product – for you to take away and create your very own product. Very often, as we have seen more and more of these recently, you are given the ’source-code’ files, to do with as you please.

The ’source code’ is the engine of the product – usually everything you need to develop your own version.

Sounds good?

In theory – YES.

In practice – it can be disappointing. Not because the product is poor – NO. Usually the products are very good. But because of how others abuse the rights and the source code.

Herein lies the problem. Whilst you could easily fork out $197, $297, $397, $497 and much more for the ‘Source Code Master Resale Rights’ of a product – or even a bunch of products, within a matter of minutes, I GUARANTEE you that someone else is already selling the complete, entire package elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

Rather than taking the product, creating something with it, selling it, and then trying to use the Master Resale Source Code Rights as an ‘upsell’ – they are simply selling the entire package, untouched for silly prices.

This really does belittle and devalue the main package. And of course, will annoy the hell out of all those who paid full price for the package in order to set up some good products of their own.

Somewhere, there is some rule, or Law or something, which legally means that the original seller of the package (Master Rights, Resale Rights, Source Code etc) – CANNOT legally enforce a minimum selling price for these items.

Where that emanates from, I have no idea. But many internet marketers know they cannot force anyone to sell their resale rights product, for a set minimum amount.

So, they buy the resale rights, which the seller *indicates* a minimum resale price – but they ignore this, and resell it for 1/10th of that price. Which makes it look cheap and nasty.

What’s the point of the article?

1. To make you aware of the problems that this little sector is facing, and how you could be feeling rather sick within hours of splashing out hundreds of dollars on Rights to something you believed would be a good product for you.

2. The internet is a BIG place – so although there are a few that spoil things, they certainly haven’t got the market sewn-up, and there are likely to be many other people out there willing to pay a *fair price* for your product.

3. If you are thinking about issuing Resale Rights, Master Rights, Source Code rights to YOUR product(s) – just think of everything mentioned above.

4. If you buy these Rights, and soon see lots of others promoting the very same product or package for a stupidly low price – be different. NO – don’t undercut their price, just make YOUR package irresistible by adding more features, more support, more bonuses – or even better, simply IMPROVE the product and then sell it.

5. The best way to avoid this ever-growing problem, is to create your own product. That way, it’s YOURS, your OWN it, you control it. And there’s not hundreds of others trying to give it away for (next to) nothing!

Don’t necessarily jump in to buy the latest Master Rights / Source Code offer. If you pay full price, someone will be offering the same package for pennies on the dollar, before you’ve even downloaded yours! Wait and see!
