What If a Baby Cries

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:38 pm

I just saw a book where the author (an MD) claims that a colicky baby cries, not because he is in pain, but because he has a message to tell or his crying is leading to his speech development. That may be the case in some instances, but considering our experiences with our oldest son, 36 years ago, I couldn’t disagree more.

Our son’s crying spells began when he was about 20 days old. No, he wasn’t allergic to formula; he was breastfed. He wasn’t sick at all; he didn’t even catch a cold until after he was a year old. He never developed a diaper rash either, until we took him on a trip when he was nine and a half months old.

After coming home from the hospital, our son put on weight regularly and normally; he also began sleeping through the night when he was a month old. Yet, he cried, writhing in pain throughout the day and especially in the evening around 5 or 6 PM when his father returned home from work.

Every day and evening, as he screamed, he pulled his knees up; his stomach and belly got hard and swollen; and he passed gas, non-stop. Now, can anyone do that if he is not in pain?

His pediatrician shrugged the whole thing off. “Since it is your first child, that’s normal,” he said. Did that mean we were nervous parents? I don’t think so. I was in my late twenties and my husband in his thirties. We considered ourselves mature adults on the conservative side. Still our baby cried uncontrollably, throughout the day, and even more vehemently, in the evening.

It is true that I could never leave a crying baby alone. “Let him be. Leave him in his crib; close the door and go about your business,” was the norm in those days. If I ever tried that advice, I probably didn’t last more than fifteen minutes. So our first child ended up getting carried around the house throughout the day by me, and in the evenings, by his father. To this day, because of our son’s colic, I am grateful to Swanson’s TV dinners.

To be on the fair side, our baby gave us a little break if we took him on a car ride or rocked him tirelessly. By the time his fourth month was about over, colic decided to leave our house.

As to the concept of colic becoming an indication of speech development, that is false, too, at least in my experience. Our younger son talked earlier than his older brother and he was more verbal, too; and he never had colic.

Nowadays, effective or not, there are so many therapies against colic: herbal remedies and teas containing chamomile, vervain, licorice, fennel, lemon balm, cardamom, angelica, peppermint, and yarrow; dimethicone as regular medicine; antispasmodic and sedating drugs dicyclomine and dicycloverine, although with probable and serious side effects; chiropractic spinal manipulation; and yes, an electronic cry analyzer.

It is a fact that all babies cry. They must, because crying is their way of communicating with us. They tell us of their needs with their crying. A crying baby may be telling us he is hungry, tired, cold, too warm, and uncomfortable in tight clothes or dirty diapers, or he needs to be held, loved, and consoled.

A crying baby who is sick has a different tone to his voice. He usually sounds high-pitched and frightened. When a baby cries like that, make sure you call the doctor or take him to the hospital. That baby might be telling you that his health needs immediate attention.

If you have a colicky baby, never lose your patience. Never, ever, shake a baby or any young child. Better yet, call a hotline, his grandparents, your friends, your next door neighbor, anybody you can reach who can give you some comfort.

If your newborn baby is having a crying spell, wrap him up in a bundle and see if he quiets down. Some babies are consoled when they are wrapped.

If that doesn’t work, let him suck on a pacifier.

Put on some soft music or turn on an appliance with a buzzing sound.

While you are trying to soothe and reassure the baby, keep talking to him. It is remarkable how much comfort a baby can found in just hearing your voice.

Give him extra cuddling.

Change his position if you are holding him or if he is lying on his bed.

Entertain him. At about three months, a baby starts being aware of his environment. At this stage, mobiles, soft toys, and even television may come in handy.

Having the baby on some kind of a schedule that is not too tight or too loose and is comfortable to both the baby and the parents is a good idea, also. While most babies determine their own routine and do better finding their own way, others are happier on a stricter feeding schedule.

While you bathe, feed, clothe, and comfort your baby, make sure you take care of yourself and get enough sleep, too. A parent who doesn’t get enough sleep or cannot find personal time for herself (himself) will suffer more and so will her (his) baby eventually.

May you all enjoy happy, healthy, and contented babies.

What’s In A Business Plan?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:35 pm

Ideas can start anywhere. This can happen when a person is driving or when one is just sitting down and noticing something that nobody has thought of. Given that opportunities don’t happen very often and being the first counts, the individual can begin to put it on paper and work on the details.

If the person wants to start up a business but does not have enough money to make it happen, then that individual should look out for investors. In order for these people to be interested in this dream, a business plan must be drawn up before it can go any further.

Investors read a lot of business plans monthly and since it is hard to decide on which to accept, one should make sure that the document stands out by making it simple and brief for these people to understand.

It must have something concrete that will show how successful it can be compared to other proposals. This must have projections and figures that people can read. It must have a model explaining in detail how revenue will soon pour in.

Another thing that must be present in the business plan is the marketing aspect of the project. How will this reach the market? What steps will be taken should it not work out in the beginning? Will distributors be able to sell it? Who will benefit from this product? What is the gender and age group will this cater to?

It should also have a sales plan. It should explain how this product will be distributed. Will it be done directly or through another source? How much will it cost to make such a product? What is the manpower needed to make the operation work?

Should the person have a variety of products in store for the business, one can already determine and claim that a certain product will be the core line of the venture. This will be the key that will lead the growth in sales.

Since it all boils down to money, the document must show how much is needed for this to work in the first year of operation. It is best to show these in phases so the investors can see at point how the business is dong and where the money for this project be used. Most importantly, how long before the investment will pay off.

Investors may not have the time to read one’s business plan even if this has been mailed weeks before the scheduled presentation. To overcome this, one should put it in slides so that a visual presentation similar to the one on paper can be viewed by these people. The summary of the business plan should state clearly what the person wants to happen.

Simplicity is the best way for people to understand the business plan. By putting down important details that these expect to find, there is no doubt that investors will want to put out money and make the person’s dream a reality.

One should remember that some of the most successful businesses today started with humble beginnings. Some started out with practically nothing but through patience and hard work, the sacrifices have paid off.

If the individual has a dream, one should make it happen. If the person doesn’t, perhaps in time someone else will.

Weird Games, Part II

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:33 am

Tired of playing same old boring games? There are dozens of wacky, offbeat or just plain weird games out there and I’ve got the scoop on the latest releases. Check ‘em out.

Varmintz (Skunk Studios)

This humorous game places the safety of a wacky crew of raccoons in your hands. In Varmintz Deluxe, you guide five furry creatures through an obstacle-packed maze.

Varmintz Deluxe brings back classic hop-and-dodge style gameplay in a fast-paced, character-rich environment. The game includes a range of characters and stars. Varmintz is a scrappy raccoon posse in search of golden eggs. Each of the more than 50 levels contains a variety of challenging obstacles and in-game enemies, including rabid dogs, lumberjacks, cowboys, joggers, and skateboarders.

Oh yeah, it’s the only game of this kind, where you have no weapons whatsoever. Good luck!

Enigmo (MumboJumbo)

Enigmo is a 3D puzzle game where you move various streams of flowing liquid so that the droplets get to their destination. Liquids (water, oil, and lava) fall from “droppers” and will bounce around the walls of a mechanism. You move and rotate into position various types of bumpers, sliders, accelerators, and sponges in order to divert the flow of the falling droplets. The faster you complete each level, the more bonus you will receive. The puzzles in Enigmo are mainly about studying the environment and knowing the devices at your disposal. How does water react with the sponge? How does oil react with the bumper? What will happen with the lava if you rotate the slider just a little bit? The game is made more complex by having to accomplish elements in a certain order. You not only have to divert 50 drops of liquid into the receptacle, you also have to first gain access to the receptacle. There’s a lot about which to think, here, and it’s rare that I ever solved a puzzle correctly on the first try. Trial and error is the way to get through this game

Pax Galaxia (Dio Games)

Pax Galaxia is a uniquely addictive real time strategy game of stellar conquest. The difficulty ranges from extremely easy to nearly impossibly difficult. While the easy modes are suitable for a fun couple of minutes trying to beat your time records, the more difficult ones will require all your concentration and the mastery of all the tricks of the game to overcome the computer players.

There are more than thirty maps to choose from, and you can quickly make many more using the random map generator and the easy to use in-game editor. You can choose between four levels of difficulty and each map can be played multiple times with each of the opposing forces. You’ll be entertained for months.

Article Marketing 101: Good Old Fashioned Outlines

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:30 am

Over the past year alone, I have seen tons of new software and
tools come out to help article marketers. Article submitting
software, article creation software, private label articles,
and tons of ghostwriters to help get your articles flowing. But
I am still very old school when it comes to article marketing.

The best things that I use is the same thing I used over 15
years ago.

A notebook and a pen.

Nothing can replace fresh ideas that pop in your head and
having the ability to write them down.

I always carry a notebook with me. You never know when an
article idea will pop up in your head.

Standing in line at the bank, waiting to checkout your
groceries at the supermarket, etc. etc

Sometimes an idea for an article pops up, but you havent
written the entire article. Create an outline.

Remember outlines. We learned them in school and thought they
were huge time wasters. They come in so handy now.

Create a simple outline that will work

>>> Here is an example of an article outline that you can use
for every article you write online.

Article Title: write down an idea of the title you would like
to write. It has to be a catchy title, and sometimes you don’t
have the title until you have finished the entire article.

Subject: what do you want to write about in the first place.
What is the point that you are trying to get across.

Paragraph One:

This is your introduction, summary in one. Lead into the topic
with the first few sentences that will keep them reading.
Present your opinion or subject here and then reinforce it
throughout the article.

Paragraph Two

Give examples, and help to support your topic. People like to
see facts and/or real life solutions that have worked for you
that will work for them. Help and inform here. Remember to
emphasize your point. Anticipate any questions that people may
have when they read your article and answer them beforehand. A
true time saver is to have their questions already answered.

Paragraph Three

This is a summary of what you have focused on already. You want
to stand firm to what you’re talking about, give some words of
advice if needed, and be helpful and reassuring. By now, you
should know the title of your article. Half of the time you
will notice that you started writing one article, and it ended
up into another article altogether. That is why I suggest
waiting until the end to come up with a title for your article.

When people look for articles online, they are looking for
solutions. Remember most people can find a lot of information
already through the newspapers, libraries, television, and
books. Your articles have to grab their attention and get them
to remember you in the long run.

Happy writing.
